Generally okay, but a few things really let it down, which despite the lowish price tag are nevertheless unacceptable for what you can reasonably expect in this day and age.

The mousepad is incredibly cumbersome and sometimes becomes quite unresponsive / unpredictable / hard to control / freezes for an indefinite amount of time, and when playing Spotify, iTunes, music or videos, the processors tend to not be able to keep up and it makes this weird momentary electronic chirping noise. Not great.

There is also a defect whereby if you use the headphone lead to make a connection to your speakers it disables the mouse. Again, something unnecessarily annoying.

I wouldn't look at this as a long term investment, more of a stop gap if you just need something to do the essentials. Everything else is functional enough though, and the keyboard is ergonomically appealing.

I've not felt compelled to write a review before, but felt these faults have...

Review 1 : hardware great - spoiled by the add-in software and poor support
Have just bought a new Vaio (from the Sony shop via Amazon). Quick to arrive, beautifully made, and very solid-feeling. Only downsides on the hardware are that the screen is very shiny, so you have to be careful where you put it to avoid reflections, and the built-in speakers are very weedy indeed (although the sound is fine through headphones or external speakers).

The big failure is the Sony add-on software (VAIO Care and VAIO Update). As you go through the set-up process, the machine asks you to register with the Sony Vaio website. So far, so good. It then connects itself to a thing called VAIO Update, and (I assume) checks for any driver etc updates. Mine kept throwing up error messages "VAIO Update does not recognise your VAIO" and then disconnecting. Now two weeks of fruitless discussion with various Sony helpdesks, given a whole load of useless answers ranging from "It's not needed anyway, ignore it" to "Re-install all the software" - which I did and which -...
