This is last the last generation Macbook Air, the current Intel i5 is a lot faster, in most tests double the speed without any impact on battery life. Most recent Air also has a backlit keyboard. Worth paying the extra for. Other than that its an excellent notebook.

If you can wait, the new Macbook Air with the new Intel Ivybridge processor should be out April/May time.

Review 1 : So, does this beast roar?
As I write this, the price has been heavily discounted. I suppose it's to make up for Lion (10.7) not being present. It's not really a big deal, as you can get it from the Mac App Store for about twenty quid, whilst your in your underwear. (i.e. you don't even have to leave your home)

This is a CRACKING machine, despite having only 2GB of RAM. It super-snappy, thanks to the SSD.

The MacBook Air is a marvel, it's no surprise that Apple have ditched the white plastic Macbook - this is the future. (An aside: have you noticed that they've removed the optical drive from the new Mac Mini? Optical drives are so passé.

I'm glad I settled on this in the end
Lets get this straight from the outset, Apple equipment can be expensive (although no more than some of the Sony, HP, and Dell models out there), compared to some of the Windows boxes being given away with a packet of cornflakes these days. However, it's about the same sort of price I paid for Sony notebooks in the 90's. The big difference is that this runs OSX. Having suffered Microsoft's various O/S' since Windows first came out I took the plunge with OSX about a year ago and never intend to go back (OK I have to at work but not at home ...)

Anyhow I finally dumped my Windows laptop but couldn't decide on whether to go for a Pro or the new Air. I liked the idea of some of the feature set of the ipad (instant on, solid state memory), but with a desktop O/S, so after much soul searching and saving every available penny I bought an Air.

When you get it, it's beautifully presented (some expensive hifi manufacturers could learn a thing or two) and when you take it...

Review 1 : macbook air - style over substance?
The Macbook Air is a beautiful piece of engineering by Apple. It is ultra thin and stylish in a compact light form. I would describe it as the supermodel of note books in terms of design.
Below the surface however is a dual core 1.86ghz processer which is rather old tech with a 128gb solid state flash drive and 2gb of ram.(I would upgrade to 4gb of ram as this is soldered onto the board and is non upgradable once purchased)

The machine is lightning fast on boot up. It takes less then 14 seconds to boot up in both mac o/s and Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Full Version (PC DVD), 1 User installed in bootcamp with lots of additional software installed on the mac.(bootcamp allows you to install the windows operating system on a partioned drive its easy to set up with the bootcamp assistant on mac o/s)...

Review 1 : The most achingly gorgeous piece of technology after the iPad2
The second version of the MacBook Air (MBA) builds considerably on the success of the first. It has more processing power, more memory and more ports. The form factor makes this the very best laptop in its class bar none. Build quality is peerless. The aluminium design of the unibody enclosure makes the machine light yet robust. And, the best reason to own a Mac, OSX 10.6 makes this machine simple, easy and enjoyable to use.

As other reviewers note, if you run video or graphics-intensive programs, you may find that the MacBook Air less speedy than the MacBook Pro. Nevertheless, the GPU 320 is excellent and gives it unprecedented performance in a machine of this size. Watching videos, playing Call of Duty and editing video can easily be achieved with the Air. years back when i was fed up with a slowing windows based laptop issued at work i went out and bought a mbp and loved it, but over time the weight and size and the then better issues of windows laptops at work a few years after i bought my original one meant i went back to windows. here i am again, a few more years down the road and again an ever slowing windows portable being carried around which seems to take forever to boot and generally run. so i went out and bought the macbook air 11 1.6ghz 4mb, admittedly a slightly different version than this one but i bought it off the shelf in a store in singapore. i've had it for a week now and simply put i am floored... the things i love:
1. instant resume on opening of the lid
2. great battery life
3. great performance - plenty of windows open and works fine
4. size and weight means i carry it everywhere - from my bed to anywhere around the house
5. great network access: i own an android mobile and these have a...

Review 2 : Deceptively satisfying
Having used a 1st gen MacBook Air (launched c. 2008), I was very pleasantly surprised by this model. Stunned even.

I have had this for six weeks and it remains super-snappy and responsive. The onboard SSD makes a huge difference and the modest 2GB seems plenty, somehow. (On my Mac Mini I have 8GB of RAM, it has a spinning hard drive and it is better than this for things like casual web surfing & word processing)

This isn't cheap, but it's good value. If someone in your household/family is in school, you may just qualify for an educational discount, if you order by phone or online from the Apple Education Store. That said, every now and then, Amazon reduces the price even further so it's an idea to keep checking this page.

This is the future of laptops. If you travel a lot on planes, this is a delight to have.
