A Great all in one
I recently had to buy a replacement for my old laptop and I didn't want to buy a top of the range model. The Aspire had a reasonable spec and price (the 4gb of ram and 500 gig harddisk was particularly attractive).

The performance has been excellent. I'm a developer by trade, and have several large development tools installed. There is very little noticeable slowdown between apps, even when running virtual linux machines in the background.
The hard disk is also large enough to satisfy these requirements.

The screen is large and clear. It's shiny, but this doesn't interfere with the visibility.

The Intel mobile graphics card is reasonable. While not being able to contend with intensive 3D gaming, it can deal with the top titles from 2 or 3 years ago.

My only gripes are:
1) The sound isn't great (a single speaker with little definition or volume).
2) The s and k keys on the keyboard pop out on occasion (though this may be a...

This is by no means a long term review of this product as I got this through work a week ago to replace a Toshiba Satellite Laptop and all in all I'm pretty happy with the performance. I spend a lot of time on my computer and it's rarely turned off. I do development work on it, running hefty database queries, so it needs to be reasonably high powered but above all reliable. My old Toshiba really did take some stick and it's still working now, only very slowly.
The technical specification of this laptop are very good for the price. The picture is clear and bright and the keyboard is pleasant to use. The only areas were you can see that this is made to a price are the speakers (there is only one of them and it sounds pretty poor), and the general build quality. Don't get me wrong it's not falling apart but when compared to other similar priced lower spec'd laptops the plastics are a bit cheap. My old Toshiba for instance which was probably cheaper when new is much tougher feeling...
Review 2 : Great quick Laptop
Very good Laptop with fast CPU, 4 GB Memory and huge 500Gb Hard disk which is why I chose it. With this lot Windows 7 loads Word 2007 in 4-5 seconds and closes down from Windows in approx 6 secs - how quick is that for the price!

Two minor grousies - power input into PC is loose and can come out easily. Secondly, would have preferred a deeper keyboard to be able to rest my wrists on!

Apart from these slight negatives, I enjoy using this laptop - the setting up of the Wireless connection printer and internet through the PC is unbelievable simple and fast. Boy have things changed in the past 5 years!

If you purchase this laptop which I do recommend - enjoy, as much as I do.

Excellent for all abilities
I bought this laptop for someone who is just starting to learn about the world of computers, after eventually giving in to popular demand and curiosity. I wanted something that would respond quickly, play HD video well, but also be lightweight and cheap. I couldn't have made a better choice!

The laptop - using the latest DDR3 RAM, and a Core2Duo processor - means that power consumption is low, yet you still get all the performance there when its needed. This gives it a battery life of around 6 hours, and maybe even that is extendable!

It doesn't feel too plasticy like a lot of laptops you can buy these days: it seems robust and well-designed. I'm sure my student isn't going to damage it any time soon.

The only slight pitfall is that there are only 2 USB ports. Maybe not a big problem in my case: we're using a fully wireless printer, and the only USB device is a mouse - trackpads take a lot of getting used to.

Review 2 : Does what it says on the box..........well.
Not being into computer gaming or vast video editing projects, what I wanted when looking for a new computer was something that does the basics well. The basics in this case being internet and e-mail, and running the latest office and DTP software.

A quick look arround came up with several computers that seemed to fit the bill, but what drew my attention to this one was the full alpha numeric keyboard. Yes, a laptop with a numeric input pad! I was sold.

Despite the quirks and foibles of Windows 7 (I'll get used to it) I quickly found my new gadget fit the bill quite nicely. Running Microsoft Office 2007 pro, BBC i player, and all the run of the mill tasks are well executed by this quite charming little machine.

OK, so it only has two USB ports, no integral webcam, and doesn't even come with system restore discs (you have to create your own), but the user friendly keyboard, touchpad and exelent widescreen graphics make the user experience quite...

Review 2 : Stiff pad buttons
A brilliant laptop, loads and shuts down very quickly, BUT the mouse-pad key bar is so stiff I have to use a separate mouse to avoid pains in the ends of my fingers. This is a VERY badly designed single tilt bar that is far too stiff. I'd not buy any laptop with this feature again. My son has a Compaq Presario with a split finger button bar that causes no problems,

Fine well-priced Laptop
Have had this laptop for over a year now and it has run perfectly. This is the 7th Dell product (6 laptops) I have bought for me and my family over the years and I have NEVER had a problem with any of them.
Specifically the 1545 - firstly I'm not a game player, I use it for web browsing, emails, some photo manipulation and I also manage two websites. I dual-boot Ubuntu Linux and Windows Vista and also run a virtual machine running Vista. So the 1545 can be worked hard and copes admirably in these scenarios.
The keyboard is excellent, being plenty large enough to type comfortably and the key-travel is fine. Screen is clear and bright.
On this model the the whole body (lid and keyboard surround) is highly-polished black. This, in my opinion, makes the machine look good but it produces two problems, albeit small ones. Firstly it means the surround can get greasy from one's hands, I use spectacle cleaning fluid to clean the screen and the surround occasionally. Secondly,...
