All Acer laptop-models are numbered according their screen size. Great laptop for the price!
I purchased this laptop before I went off to university in 2008, and I still have it to this day, infact, I am using it to write this review. When it arrived it was as stylish as it looks in the pictures and was really easy to set-up. I am not an expert in laptops or PC's but the descriptions and specifications were easy to understand and not too technical. I researched laptops in my price range and found that this laptop was all I would ever need, hence why I stil have it now. It easily matched, and sometimes beat, the specifications of laptops with a similar price. I looked at Sony Vaio, Asus, Toshiba and Dell and all were either more expensive for lower specifications or just generally got bad reviews across the board.

The addition of a Blu-Ray player also made me want to buy this laptop and the great thing about it is that it also upscales normal DVDs, meaning any DVDs which you watch will automatically look better.

i bought this laptop due to me having a accident with a cup of tea
over the key board of my last laptop,
i have to say i am very impressed, i actually ordered the 5532 windows 7
laptop but recieved the 5732z model which is a better model by having a
intel pentium prosseser t4300,not t3400 that is stated on the specifications,
instead of a amd prossecer ,(so slow) so it is a marginally superior processer,
i have only had this for a few days but i am exstremly pleased with the purchase
and windows 7 which is such light weight ease when using it compared to vista
and i have been a vista fan and never a vista basher!!
the screen is a 16.9 viewing experience and gives the impression of a larger
screen than it is and with 3 gb of memory with windows 7 it is a new experience while
using this laptop, with such ease and grace and a touch of class, another budget range laptop from acer
with the feel and specs of a solid midrange laptop.
Review 2 : almost excellent
This is a very a good low price all-rounder - fast, very good screen and extras included such as a good qulity web cam. Also, an apparently well designed hardware set up along with the (so far) trouble free Windows 7 mean that slow operations and crashes almost never happen.

The first obvious problems are on the audio side: despite a good web cam, there's no michrophone. And the speakers are the worst I've ever heard on a computer....like the sound out of an ear-piece.

Both these faults are easily solved by connecting auxilliary speakers and mike, but that does, of course, reduce its utilty as a portable.

General point: When will manufacturers (of TVs, computers - any muti-media stuff) get it into their heads that audio quality is every bit as important as video quality?

Beautifully presented netbook which is really easy to use. The full size keyboard is a boon and the screen although small is very clear and you soon do not notice the compact size. Mouse pad has always been a problem for me and this machine is no different - must be an age thing so I use a cordless mini mouse.

One star short of a full five, because it has twice not opened up properly, requiring me to remove the battery and reinsert to enable me to boot up. On-line care is day sensitive, so had to use independent computer geek to sort out.

Would still recommend highly due to all its other plus points.

Wouldn't recommend
I have had this laptop since last January and all it has done is give me problems. I was told that Acer are reliable but I will never buy from them again. It has become very slow as I am an art student and have been trying to use it for Photoshop etc. The keys are always falling of, it's heavy to carry around. Within a month of buying it the disk drive stopped working and I had to send it back. It often has problems booting up and I am worried any day I will lose all my work (so I back it up). For the money that it cost me I expected to be able to use functions like Iplayer but it is very slow with video despite me having a good internet connection. I don't misuse my laptop, there is no reason for the keys to break. For this money get a Toshiba or spend a little more and get a Mac, this laptop doesn't seem made to last. (I am typing with broken keys now but they are the little rubbery stumps underneath the keys, VERY annoying).

I have always bought Acer products because they represent good value for money. (I've got two Acer Desktops and two Notebooks and my wife bought an Acer Notebook too).I was not disappointed with this product. At 3Gb Plenty of RAM for the ordinary user good processor speed and huge hard disc at 500Gb. HDMI input is a real boon for reviewing HD camcorder footage in the native format and movies play without jerkiness in widescreen format. I particularly like Windows 7 which is preinstalled and it seems after several attempts Microsoft have finally got it right. As ever the Acer management system is a gem. Very good buy.

I bought the Acer Aspire 5542 last year as I was starting a postgraduate course and I needed a reliable laptop for word-processing. Our relationship started well, things were running smoothly and I was enjoying using my new laptop. Things took a turn for the worse a few months ago when out of nowhere the laptop started to restart and shut down of its own accord, it was also prone to freezing on a regular basis. Now every time I write a long piece of text I'm constantly saving the document (more than normal) for fear that the laptop decides it has had enough and will go for a little nap without warning. As soon as I can afford to buy a new laptop I shall invest in a Mac. This was my first Acer product, and I was led to believe it was a reliable brand however; I'm starting to have some serious doubts about that. Acer has well and truly lost my future custom (and that of my friends and family).

I don't know whether my laptop is simply extremely faulty, or if it's a problem with this make/batch. But I was given this laptop quite some-time ago as a birthday present it was bought from Tescos. So it had a one year guarantee on it, in that year it had to go back several times because of issue after issue after issue.

Pros -
+ The laptop has decent specifications for average use
+ The wide-screen is brilliant for movies
+ Speakers are well-placed so they won't interfere with typing
+ Because it's issued with Windows 7 it's easy to navigate

Cons -
- It's very heavy, I have a newer laptop (gaming one) that has a massive battery and is a-lot larger in size but it weighs the same
- The battery doesn't hold charge for anywhere near what's advertised
- The charger it came with melted, (a friend of mine who had this laptop too, their charger caught fire)
- It gets incredibly hot (now I'm no idiot, I use my laptop on hard clean...

Review 2 : Right second time
I spent a great deal checking all the options before settling on this ACER laptop. It is or my 9 year old son, so I was looking for something that gave reasonable perforamnce in basic functions such as web surfing and writing documents at a reasoanble price and this certainly fitted the bill.

It was very easy to setup and was up and running in no time at all. That's when I hit the snag - as soon as I moved the laptop more than a metre from my wireless router it lost connection. After several reboots and reloading drivers it was still no better. I knew it was the kaptop having an issue with range as I had five other laptops connecting at the other end of the house with no problem. However, I can have nothing but praise for Amazon's customer service. No quibbles, no declarations that it must be my fault. The faulty laptop was collected the next day and the replacment arrived the day after. This one worked perfectly.

Excellent laptop for the price, and no problems whatsoever. I was a bit wary about buying it as I'd read reviews which said it kept freezing (I think due to a combination of power settings and Vista), but no problems with Windows 7.

Runs quickly, and is lightweight yet has a disc drive, so I'm happy. Have to say though I did buy it thinking it was black, but it's actually got a darksih grey matte lid. Very stylish though, and multi-gesture touchpad is great and easy to use. No Bluetooth, but dongles are cheap.

Keyboard feels slightly cheap but that might just be the finish, and it looks good. HD graphics make films look great despite the lack of Blu-Ray player. This is the best laptop for the money of its size and power. The processor speed could be better, but then you do get a decent battery life on it and a good graphics card.

I've had this laptop for just under a year and to date I am very pleased with it. The laptop is very thin and light and therefore extremely easy to carry around. The battery life is fantastic. It easily lasts 5 or 6 hours and can go up to around 8, depending on what you're doing on it. Another bonus is that it never gets hot. You can sit with this laptop on your lap for hours at a time without having to worry about it over-heating - it keeps itself cool which is brilliant.
I have had a few problems with this laptop though. It tends to freeze sporadically. I'll be in the middle of something and it will just freeze for no reason. This happens a maximum of maybe a couple of times a week. It's not a massive problem but it can get a bit annoying, especially when word documents are open. However, there is an autosave feature with microsoft so I've never lost anything. Also, the laptop doesn't open very far - only to about a 95 degree angle.
