High quality, modern, good value, but annoying niggles mean I can't recommend it.
N.B. I first wrote this review after using the laptop for a day or two, and have since edited it twice to reflect ongoing use. I don't intend to update it again unless something big changes. Review 1 : Sleek bit of kit
A neat notebook pc. I won't repeat the specs, common features etc as they have been covered in the existing excellent reviews. It's a nice sleek black design. The keys are raised and then moulded in so any crumbs, dust etc can be easily extracted/wiped off without it disappearing into the internal mechanism.
The base unit is metallic and stays comfortably cool to the touch whilst using it. Also it has a nifty touch pad that can be used to expand/shrink the screen size a la an ipad (discovered by accident!) it's really light and compact, largely due to the omission of a CD drive, and doesn't actually feel that much bulkier than an ipad in relation to other laptops I have used.
The power lead is connected to the side though I would have preferred the back personally and the bloatware that comes with this is annoying. One programme in particular is designed to monitor your activity and keystrokes which I find insidious and would recommend binning at the first available time. It...
Review 2 : A Good Value Notebook
As a note book PC, the ASUS X401A is not small but it is light in weight and has a good bright screen. Other than the lack of a CD/DVD ROM drive, it is very close to being a full-blown Laptop. It's a smart piece of kit, nice to own but not so easy to load software that arrives on an optical disc.

Since it is a PC with Windows 7 installed, there is no point in commenting on the standard features of any PC, only what is unique to this one. Also no point in quoting the features; they can be found in the manufacturer's literature.

Encouragingly, it arrived with the battery well charged so that it could be tried without having to plug it into the mains. It claims to have a long battery life and magazine reviews seem to confirm this for ASUS products generally.

One thing I really like about it is that it is as good as silent even in a quiet room; it doesn't make its presence felt. Its keyboard has a nice tactile feel with the keys well spaced to reduce...

Quality at a good price
Having had this laptop for a few days now I can confirm that having a laptop with a touchscreen is necessary to get the best Windows 8 experience. The best thing about this laptop for me is the stylish aluminium casing, which is similar in some ways to what Cupertino has been doing with its laptops but is arguably even better-looking due to the way the design tapers towards the front. In terms of hardware, this laptop doesn't have the muscle that non-touchscreen laptops of a similar price have, but Windows 8 is definitely feels a lot lighter and faster than previous versions of Windows and so I don't really notice the slower processor. Definitely a top recommendation!

Review 1 : Very good for the price
If you've checked any interweb reviews of this laptop, you'll have seen they tend to pick it apart on 3 things:

1) Battery Life. The battery does indeed run out fairly quick if you are gaming, especially with WiFi on. Don't expect more than a couple of hours from this scenario. If however, you knock the screen down to medium brightness and are doing basic productivity tasks like typing up a document, you'll get nearer 4 hours. Turn off WiFi (it's a quick hotkey so don't be afraid to turn it on and off as you need it) and you can be upwards of 5. Not sure what the pro-reviews usually have available, but to me 4-5 hours out of a laptop is very acceptable!

2) Keyboard flex. If you press in between the keys, yes it bends a little. When typing however, unless your fists are made of ham, you really shouldn't have a problem. The keys are quiet and soft, and there's no obvious click, which may or may not suit your preference. I've had no issues with non-responsive keys,...
Review 2 : A solid laptop, but not without its issues
The ASUS S400CA is a solid laptop, there's no denying that fact. However, there are some issues with it that can cause concern, especially since this isn't a cheap option by any means.

So what's good about the laptop?
- It's stylish looking, light and thin.
- Battery life is "good" and I've managed to get 4-6 hours from it.
- The keyboard is a joy to type on and feedback is good.
- Trackpad is large for Windows 8 and is of good quality.
- Has a responsive touch screen.
- Runs silent and cool, even when performing demanding tasks.
- i3 chip, ASUS motherboard and more can handle major tasks (Photoshop, etc.)
- Easy to upgrade with both RAM slot and HDD easy to access.
- Sports a USB 3 port.

Now the negatives:
- Touchpad can have a mind of its own and incorrectly register gestures.
- Screen reflects sun glare and light too much - but is more than usable in shade / darker environments.

I believe that this is currently the cheapest laptop of it's type on the market, it is a good looking laptop that is well specified for the price.

Pros:

. Light, slim and good looking laptop, similar in style to an Ultrabook but a little thicker.
. The touchscreen enables Windows 8 to be used as it was intended.
. It has an Ethernet port and VGA connector which set it apart from most slim laptops.
. Great for basic web surfing, email and word processing.

Cons:
. This isn't a particularly powerful laptop (PC Pro magazine give it an overall Real World Benchmark score of 0.48 which is similar to a full size budget laptop) but changing the internal hard drive for an SSD will improve performance.

I've had my Vivobook for less than a week, but I'm already loving it.

Until the Vivobook, I've been running Windows XP - primarily because I've enjoyed using my netbooks, but also because Vista and Windows 7's bloat meant that I couldn't upgrade any of my current laptops or desktops. With XP reaching the end of its life in early 2014, moving to Windows 8 has become a bit of a necessity. Recent experience on a friend's new laptop (a 15.6" non-touchscreen Toshiba) made it clear that Windows 8 is not particularly friendly on non-touchscreen devices. We had a very poor time getting it set-up for our hardware, and learning how to use it. The "tile" interface is a particular hindrence to non-touchscreen computers.

The Vivobook costs a little more than I wanted to spend, but I was sold on the touchscreen. I come from netbooks, so the 11.6" size actually feels a bit large to me but it's much more convenient, and lightweight, than my friend's monster of a 15.6" heavy...
Review 2 : Love this! A fab little notebook
I was looking for an Ultrabook so I had something fast and lightweight. However, my budget meant I had to aim for slightly cheaper - so I found this. After some deliberating, I took the plunge and bought it, having had a good look in-store. I am a tech novice so cannot go into very much spec critique, but these are the reasons I bought it and why I still love it after 2 weeks.
- The touch screen element was not something I was initially looking for but it works brilliantly and now I would not be without it. Windows 8 was designed for the touchscreen and it is so easy to get to grips with once you learn the tricks. I can alternate between touchscreen use for games and internet and then normal mouse for Office applications. It is a small screen, so if you have clumsy fingers like me it is great to have the choice.
