Better without Windows 8
This is a well built and attractive laptop, I won't go into too many technical details, but I feel it's better after removing the GPT partitioning through using a bootable Windows 7 USB device. I also installed Windows 7 on the SSD, but if you do this there's not much space for other programs to be installed, as Windows Home Premium leaves just 1.8GB free on the disk. As a result, I installed Office and anything else on to the 500GB drive. This is definitely not a course of action for general users as it requires a fair bit of work and knowledge.

I'm sure Windows 8 has its merits, however this is not a touch screen and, unwittingly, the basic gestures built in to the mousepad frequently caused the interface to switch which after a few days just niggled me. An earlier review had reflected on lack of performance with the WLAN. I have 100Mb Virgin broadband and the fastest speed I've achieved is around 80Mbps so don't let that deter you from this purchase, although with W8 the...

Review 1 : Lightweight, good battery life, just what I needed
I needed a laptop that I could easily carry around that has a decent battery life and that I can do basic work on (word processing, internet, etc). So far this has been perfect for my needs. The Windows 8 takes a little getting used to, and I mostly work from the Acer desktop, but overall I think this is a really good investment for someone who needs a laptop as a student or similar.

Good Budget Laptop for games - So far so good
I got this as a replacement for a different model from Acer that didn't work. My prime criteria was a cheap laptop that could play games to a reasonable degree. I am happy to say the laptop does that and I have been playing Battlefield 3 in medium setting with no problems at all. I don't know how it would perform in higher settings but so far so good. it looks really good. If it is a cheap laptop for games you are after this really works and for the price I couldn't find anything better at time of writing.

As for the rest I am happy with the laptop. It looks good and is very thin. I saw the comment on it not really being an Ultrabook but it is very thin and good enough for me.

Finally a point outside the normal review and not part of scoring. I tried to install Windows 7 over Windows 8 and it caused real problems. I had to send it in as it wouldn't turn on afterwards so if you don't want windows 8 - ask for windows 7 beforehand. None of this reflects on the...

Just a note that when installing Linux, the screen appears black, but it's just that Linux doesn't set the LCD backlight up properly for some Acer laptops, so everytime I start it up, I have to use the keyboard to increase the brightness.

Also, despite what the Acer tech support Website says, it is possible to upgrade the mSATA SSD and install the OS to it. I replaced the 20GB mSATA SSD with a 256GB SSD and was able to partition it and install Windows 8 and Linux onto the mSATA while still keeping the 500GB spinning disk for bulk storage.

The track pad is spongy, the screen is reflective and has a poor resolution (1366x768) and only the top half of the laptop is made of metal, the base feels cheap and the power connector doesn't feel like it's going to last very long.

Still, happy with the graphics card and storage capability.

Quality at a good price
Having had this laptop for a few days now I can confirm that having a laptop with a touchscreen is necessary to get the best Windows 8 experience. The best thing about this laptop for me is the stylish aluminium casing, which is similar in some ways to what Cupertino has been doing with its laptops but is arguably even better-looking due to the way the design tapers towards the front. In terms of hardware, this laptop doesn't have the muscle that non-touchscreen laptops of a similar price have, but Windows 8 is definitely feels a lot lighter and faster than previous versions of Windows and so I don't really notice the slower processor. Definitely a top recommendation!

Review 1 : Very good for the price
If you've checked any interweb reviews of this laptop, you'll have seen they tend to pick it apart on 3 things:

1) Battery Life. The battery does indeed run out fairly quick if you are gaming, especially with WiFi on. Don't expect more than a couple of hours from this scenario. If however, you knock the screen down to medium brightness and are doing basic productivity tasks like typing up a document, you'll get nearer 4 hours. Turn off WiFi (it's a quick hotkey so don't be afraid to turn it on and off as you need it) and you can be upwards of 5. Not sure what the pro-reviews usually have available, but to me 4-5 hours out of a laptop is very acceptable!

2) Keyboard flex. If you press in between the keys, yes it bends a little. When typing however, unless your fists are made of ham, you really shouldn't have a problem. The keys are quiet and soft, and there's no obvious click, which may or may not suit your preference. I've had no issues with non-responsive keys,...
Review 2 : A solid laptop, but not without its issues
The ASUS S400CA is a solid laptop, there's no denying that fact. However, there are some issues with it that can cause concern, especially since this isn't a cheap option by any means.

So what's good about the laptop?
- It's stylish looking, light and thin.
- Battery life is "good" and I've managed to get 4-6 hours from it.
- The keyboard is a joy to type on and feedback is good.
- Trackpad is large for Windows 8 and is of good quality.
- Has a responsive touch screen.
- Runs silent and cool, even when performing demanding tasks.
- i3 chip, ASUS motherboard and more can handle major tasks (Photoshop, etc.)
- Easy to upgrade with both RAM slot and HDD easy to access.
- Sports a USB 3 port.

Now the negatives:
- Touchpad can have a mind of its own and incorrectly register gestures.

I believe that this is currently the cheapest laptop of it's type on the market, it is a good looking laptop that is well specified for the price.

Pros:

. Light, slim and good looking laptop, similar in style to an Ultrabook but a little thicker.
. The touchscreen enables Windows 8 to be used as it was intended.
. It has an Ethernet port and VGA connector which set it apart from most slim laptops.
. Great for basic web surfing, email and word processing.

Cons:
. This isn't a particularly powerful laptop (PC Pro magazine give it an overall Real World Benchmark score of 0.48 which is similar to a full size budget laptop) but changing the internal hard drive for an SSD will improve performance.

I've had my Vivobook for less than a week, but I'm already loving it.

Until the Vivobook, I've been running Windows XP - primarily because I've enjoyed using my netbooks, but also because Vista and Windows 7's bloat meant that I couldn't upgrade any of my current laptops or desktops. With XP reaching the end of its life in early 2014, moving to Windows 8 has become a bit of a necessity. Recent experience on a friend's new laptop (a 15.6" non-touchscreen Toshiba) made it clear that Windows 8 is not particularly friendly on non-touchscreen devices. We had a very poor time getting it set-up for our hardware, and learning how to use it. The "tile" interface is a particular hindrence to non-touchscreen computers.

The Vivobook costs a little more than I wanted to spend, but I was sold on the touchscreen. I come from netbooks, so the 11.6" size actually feels a bit large to me but it's much more convenient, and lightweight, than my friend's monster of a 15.6" heavy...
Review 2 : Love this! A fab little notebook
I was looking for an Ultrabook so I had something fast and lightweight. However, my budget meant I had to aim for slightly cheaper - so I found this. After some deliberating, I took the plunge and bought it, having had a good look in-store. I am a tech novice so cannot go into very much spec critique, but these are the reasons I bought it and why I still love it after 2 weeks.
- The touch screen element was not something I was initially looking for but it works brilliantly and now I would not be without it. Windows 8 was designed for the touchscreen and it is so easy to get to grips with once you learn the tricks. I can alternate between touchscreen use for games and internet and then normal mouse for Office applications. It is a small screen, so if you have clumsy fingers like me it is great to have the choice.
