I needed a YA to set this up for me, but it's a doddle to use. This is the review of a non-expert laptop user.
I'm lucky to have a 20yo who is massively interested in all things gadget and techy, and boy, did I need him around to get this set up. If it had been me alone, and him back at uni, I'd have had to call our trusty PC engineer to get this set up, as it was fiddly. I can't elaborate, as I wasn't involved in the set-up at all, as there was no point explaining it to me, so sorry that I can't help here.
This is my first laptop with Windows 8, and whilst I don't even have a 'proper' smartphone, as I find the 'flicking' motion of apps far too fiddly, this is a doddle to operate...once someone has spent around an hour or so figuring out how to set it up. I have never, ever seen my son so challenged with anything IT-ish - this is a young man who coached adults and kids this summer in all aspects of IT, and who overhauled a local primary school's PC set up. Review 1 : Good value laptop
First impressions of this laptop are pretty good. For the price, it has a nice, big screen. It seems difficult, sometimes, to find a decent laptop at around this price which has a screen of this size. So that's good start. Plus, larger screen means larger keyboard (which means numeric keypad. Hurrah! Though it also means higher power consumption, which isn't so good for battery life).
Construction is solid enough, though it is plastic and has that plasticky kind of feel. The keyboard is functional enough, though I have used some of the Toshiba laptops higher up in their range and this aspect can be nicer. Still, it's fine. Good thing about it being plastic is that the laptop is remarkably light. This is certainly welcome.

Review 2 : Great Value
You're getting a 17" screen at a bargain price, but to keep the price down Toshiba only give you 4GB RAM, but the upside is that you get USB3 and a very nice screen indeed. You also get a decent 500GB HDD, which is enough for a fairly large photo/music collection
My first impression on opening the box was that the laptop was relatively light, given the size. When switched on for the first time, I definitely felt that the screen was brighter and clearer than I was used to.
Using it for the first time was pretty easy, and there's a shortcut on the desktop for you to back up the main operating files to external discs. I did that using the easy software provided and it took only 3 dvds.
Windows 8 came as a shock after the ease of Windows 7, and I must admit I downloaded the so-called Classic Screen with the Start button so that I could stick with that. Except for the start screen and the whole App thing, the new OS does seem faster with a few neat...
