Excellent price for a well made, very light weight laptop
To be honest this laptop would have got 5 stars if it wasn't for the fact that the battery only lasts half the advertised 8 hours.
For the money you get a really well made, ultra thin and light weight machine with a case made of light alloys. I bought this model to put a 256gb SSD hard drive in and for the money I haven't seen another 13" laptop with similar spec (including DVD writer) in such a nice chassis. Ok it's not as rigid as say a Macbook Pro unibody, but its 2/3 of the weight.
The only down side for me is the realistic 4 hours battery life, when I had hoped for more.
The laptop boots up quickly, runs cool in normal use. I didn't find the fan annoying and neither does it run all of the time. The new iCore processors may be fast, but they also seem to run hotter, so if pushed the laptop does warm up, but no more than any other with an iCore processor .

Review 1 : Heating Issues
I got the R630-138 for research and writing, not really using the laptop to watch films or for the webcam etc. so can really comment on that. Having had it for a few weeks I'd say it's a fairly good looking laptop, nice metal lid, good screen size, easy to type with nicely spaced soft touch keys.
The only issue I have using the R630 is that it starts getting uncomfortably hot after 5-10 minutes use. Not sure this laptop is really designed with the lap in mind - not an issue if you only intend to use it on a table top.
The fan is fairly quite, not sure why some point this out as a problem as compared to every other laptop I've had I'd say this makes much less noise. Then again maybe that's why it heats up so quickly.
Review 2 : not up to the usual toshiba quality
I was most disappointed with this laptop - I have had a previous toshiba laptop which lasted me for years and I also now have a NB200 netbook which is superb. Looks wise its a nice machine with a brushed non gloss lid, the case is a little flimsy around the Dvd rom area. The keyboard and keypad are nice and the screen is clear and not over glossy. However my main major gripes about the laptop are (1) the so called new air flow cooling - basically the fan never goes off ever, its noisy and annoying at a constant high pitched whine, its located on the bottom so when its on your lap its blocked. I tried it on a desk on lap and turned all the eco settings on but it never goes off. (2) the battery life is a complete over exaggeration advertised at up to 8 hours, again tried eco settings etc. etc. I would be surprised if anybody got more than 4 hours. I seemed to get 3 at a push. I had the laptop for a few days and also tried to resolve the problems by contacting toshiba but to no avail...
