Avoid it if you can
This laptop is amazing. Even though in the title I have said avoid it. I got this laptop three years ago, and now it even manages to keep up with new computers and have a competitive spot. This is great for a student who does nothing but research, write word documents and watch tv on their computer. It is bad for gamers. Wouldn't recommend
I have had this laptop since last January and all it has done is give me problems. I was told that Acer are reliable but I will never buy from them again. It has become very slow as I am an art student and have been trying to use it for Photoshop etc. The keys are always falling of, it's heavy to carry around. Within a month of buying it the disk drive stopped working and I had to send it back. It often has problems booting up and I am worried any day I will lose all my work (so I back it up). For the money that it cost me I expected to be able to use functions like Iplayer but it is very slow with video despite me having a good internet connection. I don't misuse my laptop, there is no reason for the keys to break. For this money get a Toshiba or spend a little more and get a Mac, this laptop doesn't seem made to last. (I am typing with broken keys now but they are the little rubbery stumps underneath the keys, VERY annoying).

Review 1 : Acer Notebooks
I have always bought Acer products because they represent good value for money. (I've got two Acer Desktops and two Notebooks and my wife bought an Acer Notebook too).I was not disappointed with this product. At 3Gb Plenty of RAM for the ordinary user good processor speed and huge hard disc at 500Gb. HDMI input is a real boon for reviewing HD camcorder footage in the native format and movies play without jerkiness in widescreen format. I particularly like Windows 7 which is preinstalled and it seems after several attempts Microsoft have finally got it right. As ever the Acer management system is a gem. Very good buy.
Review 2 : A downward spiral
I bought the Acer Aspire 5542 last year as I was starting a postgraduate course and I needed a reliable laptop for word-processing. Our relationship started well, things were running smoothly and I was enjoying using my new laptop. Things took a turn for the worse a few months ago when out of nowhere the laptop started to restart and shut down of its own accord, it was also prone to freezing on a regular basis. Now every time I write a long piece of text I'm constantly saving the document (more than normal) for fear that the laptop decides it has had enough and will go for a little nap without warning. As soon as I can afford to buy a new laptop I shall invest in a Mac. This was my first Acer product, and I was led to believe it was a reliable brand however; I'm starting to have some serious doubts about that. Acer has well and truly lost my future custom (and that of my friends and family).

Review 1 : The home portable gadget that can do EVERYTHING
I got this laptop at christmas and have used it nearly everyday. Took about 10 minutes to set up. Startup is about a minute depending on the wear and tear of it.
Windows 7 is a great addition upon the vista i had n my computer. It is much quicker and the tools like pinning things to your taskbar greatly reduce time to do tasks. Also the ability to move your gadgets around on your screen to place anywhere is another great addition from the awful sidebar.Another great feature is if you want to look at the desktop and have a lot of programmes running yu simply drag your mouse to the bottom right and it minimizes them all.
Sound isn't that great for youtube videos but any music you play sounds rather good. The N wireless is also amazing as whereever i go in my house it has 4 or 5 bars.

I received this laptop about a week ago and I have got to say that I absolutely love it. It is really fast and is very much for people who want to run different programs at the same time. It does not take ages like my previous Dell laptop. Excellent value for the low price I paid. Only one thing I would have wanted is a webcam. This model does not have a webcam despite it being in the picture. That is the only reason I have not given it a 5 stars. I would definately advise you to buy this if you are looking for an upgrade.

Does what is says on the tin
For a relatively low spec machine it does the job. I bought it for my Mum who's in here 70s and never had a computer before. With family around the globe, this laptop does enough for her to be able to keep in touch. It has enough speed and memory for the photos she's now getting that she is a happy little bunny. 3 x 320 is quite adequate for basic functions of mail, skype, faceache etc, as well having storage to suit a relatively small budget

Review 1 : just brilliant
I had a look round before deciding to purchase the Acer Aspire 5551. I've had it for a week now and i'm not dissapointed with this laptop, infact i'm very happy with it. In particular the screen. I bought it to view movies and the picture quality on this LED backlet screen is just wonderful with very deep colours and no lag.

Windows 7 is easier to navigate than it's grumpy predecessor and the graphics for games are vibrant. I'm a real fan of sid meier's civ and it plays it, stores it and loads it quickly and effortlessly.

The battery is OK, lasts about 3 hours plus. I tend to use my laptop at home so no big deal for me but would not of purchased this laptop if i needed to travel with it. Alot of laptops on the market with 6 hours plus battery life.

Another great feature is the HDMI connection. This enables you to plug your laptop directly into an HDMI enabled TV. It basically makes your TV into a huge computer screen, perfect for watching movies,...
Review 2 : quick to load: poor touch pad design
I wanted a simple to use home computer for emails and internet access. I bought the product because it was recommended by other purchasers. Amazon can usually be relied on to offer good products at competitive prices.
I had read that the touch pad has a life of its own and is over sensitive. This is true, though most of the time it's manageable. More problematic are the click left and right buttons. These make a clunking sound and do not operate smoothly. Very plastic feel to them.
It boots up quickly and I'm finding my way around gradually.
My previous Dell Inspiron was far better finished and had a definite (silent) set of buttons and I think it was a better made machine overall.

very impressive laptop
bought this out of asda at 327 so worth looking around see a new version with 3i processor at 379. bought for kids homework and so far a dream to use and no problems. nice key board and on board wireless works great. also useful software for making recovery discs which given took 4 dvds has produced a copy of the windows 7 which came already installed. speakers basic but ok compared to this price of laptop. inbuilt webcam great. took out a 70 collect and return 3 year warranty with acer on line. just watch as they are an agent company and try and flog us their own more expensive warranty that does not cover accidental damage the way the acer one does.

overall very happy with computer for the price at asda. amazon price is to much given that you can now buy a 3i processor.
