Purchased the Acer C7 Chromebook today (not from Amazon, as I wanted to physically see the difference between this and the Samsung 3). Whilst the Samsung looked more impressive and has a faster internal hard drive (SSD as opposed mechanical) for me, the glossy screen of the Acer looked that much sharper, and the keyboard was more "PC-like" than the Samsung (compare both side by side if you can to see what I mean).

I have researched Chromebooks online for awhile, so understand their benefits and shortcomings, but am very surprised just how quick I was up and running with this device. Literally within 10 minutes of plugging in the battery (which lasted a good 4+ hours straight out of the box) the machine was booting, logged in and downloading apps. Almost 5 minutes of that was the first boot/install. If you just want to use this for working on the move i.e. editing docs, skype calls, browsing etc it's perfect. The integration with Linux is great - for example if you leave it on with skype then the screen powers down etc, but the speaker still rings when you have an incoming call. The size is great - fits easily on the fold down meal tray on a plane.

In you are a geek then you have a full linux distribution underneath. I have installed lots of apps including a full java development kit. It is this years nerd toy so there are lots of posts on the web about how to use it as an on the move development environment.

Review 1 : What a disappointment
My old Toshiba laptop (c.2001) died and I was really looking forward to a modern machine with the latest sound and vision technology. Ten years on I literally couldn't believe the quality of the hardware on this machine.

The screen on my old machine had to be viewed from just the right angle, but if you got it right the pictures looked lovely. This one's viewing angle is if anything worse, and if you move the screen to get the best result, the colours are wishy-washy and beautiful pictures are barely worth looking at. There appears to be no way of adjusting colour saturation, contrast or anything else (I think this applies to pretty much all laptops). You can make the picture dimmer. That doesn't help.

I couldn't work out what was wrong with the sound. All the controls I could find were maxed out and I could hardly hear it. The answer was: nothing was wrong. The sound is just unbelievably weak and tinny. I don't know how anyone could even have a conversation over...
