pretty good lappy
i bought one of these for my daughter to replace her old toshiba satellite pro.
she needed a decent laptop to help her with her degree studdies. she also wanted a blue ray player and something that could handle gaming. sounds just the ticket. 6 gig of ram aids speed. looks are pretty and quite girlie too. 17.3 screen is a nice size for watching movies.
a few negative points though. first off you have to buy windows seperately, another 80 quid (also got norton protection in with that price and it appears quite formidable). secondly, the laptop had a problem with the hardware and could not produce back up disks (not supplied with the machine). windows kept closing down due to a problem that it couldn't identify. the machine went back to the place of purchase and was replaced within an hour. the new one appears to be ok (apart from windows closing down without explaination on occaision).
the support service provided by sony is mediocre at best. the advisors are based...

Review 1 : it's a sony, of course it's fantastic
Very pretty, very fast, very easy... but enough about me...
A self-confessed Sony-snob, this is my third Vaio - only ever changed as technology calls for more memory, more storage and faster processors.
It is quick, the quick-web-access astonishingly so. Downloading and viewing family photos and HD video is effortless, there's loads of bundled software (which I haven't used) but it hasn't been stroppy about adding external software. I am reviewing the machine rather than the operating system, but as it's bundled it's worth a comment that the move from XP to Windows7 has required zero effort and it is slick.
The screen is fantastic, and thanks to its size the full keyboard with seperate number pad is a nice bonus.
Surfing is very pacey. I hadn't realised how frustrating waiting a second between click and link was, now it's practically instant.
I'd have liked a 500GB hard drive for 'future-proofing' but, given the ease of external...
Review 2 : A lot for the money
It was a toss-up between the Sony and the HP DV7, at a similar price. The Sony got the nod to due it's 6mb of RAM and Blu-ray drive (not to mention the better looks).
The local Best Buy had a 20% off day so it was a no-brainer in the end (
